    Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.)

    Answers to your most frequently asked questions

    The alpaca is a mammal belonging to the family of camelids, is a close relative of llama guanaco vicuna dromedary and camel.

    Alpacas are native to Peru, Chile and Bolivia and still graze the Andean expanses.

    Huacaya and Suri.

    Structurally they are almost identical, but the difference in fiber is immediately apparent.

    The huacaya breed has a closed fleece with fibers that grow perpendicular to the skin and are distinguished by their undulation very similar to frisé in technical terms crimp. This covering gives the alpaca a soft, rounded appearance.

    The suri is a strange cross between bob marley hair and a mop, just kidding, it’s just a more stylish alpaca lover of dreads. The appearance, however, does not detract from the quality of the fiber which is in fact very similar to natural silk and with a luster that seems almost artificial, the fiber hangs from the body in locks that look like dreads but are very smooth and not intrigued. From a character point of view there are no great differences apart from a faster pace in treks. Suri cover only 10% of the world’s alpaca population.

    Do Alpacas spit?

    Yes, the alpaca spits, is the first warning to tell another alpaca, animal, man that he is invading too much of his personal space.

    What are the names of the baby alpacas?

    Alpaca cubs are called CRIA from birth to 6 months and TUI from 7 to 12 months.

    The llama is larger than the alpaca and has ears with the tip folded inward (banana-shaped).

    The alpaca eats about 1kg per day of fresh grass and hay balanced according to its needs. However, there may be times in its life when a higher dosage is required, such as during pregnancy, lactation, growth, etc., in these cases it is possible to use in moderation the administration of feed enriched with vitamins, mineral salts and proteins, remembering however that 90% of the diet must derive from forage and that an excess of proteins is not sufficient.

    Being a prey if not educated are shy and timid animals. Educated animals are reliable and docile that are showing suitable and promising in assisted interventions with animals (pet therapy).

    • Shearing by and no later than June 2022 to avoid heat stroke and skin infections that could occur as a result of the presence of foreign bodies embedded in the fiber of the animal, the shearing operation must be carried out once a year with the arrival of the first warm weather;
    • Filing of teeth to allow the animal to feed adequately, each animal has a different speed of growth of the teeth, the filing must therefore be evaluated year by year for each subject individually;
    • Nail clipping about every 3 months to avoid infections to the sole of the foot and trauma to the nails;
    • Supplement the diet with specific feed for camelids with high zinc content (PROGEO, ALPAMIN);
    • Perform parasitological stool examinations every six months;
    • Vaccination against clostridial disease every six months or once a year depending on the result of the antibody titration (to be evaluated with the veterinarian).
